Thought of the day

I thank whatever gods may be / For my unconquerable soul. / I am the master of my fate / I am the captain of my soul. ~William Ernest Henley, Invictus

Government's promises are like the Ringgit, they depreciate with time.

Only for guys

"Level one is like tofu... level two is similar to a peeled banana..., level three is like an unpeeled banana..., and level four is similar to a cucumber..."

Are you a tofu? Check it out.

Laughter, the best medicine

Joke I
Do you know why Singapore can be so much ahead of Malaysia?

Do you know why despite having scarce land and limited natural resources, Singapore can still emerge as a 1st world country among the Malay Archipelago?

"Because in Singapore, the Chinese rule and the Malays follow. In Malaysia, the Malays rule but the Chinese don't want to follow." from one Malay teacher from my secondary school recently.

Alamak! Smack my own forehead...

Joke II
wa salah lu mai kung (Asalamualaikum)
lu mai kung wa salah (Mualaikumsalam)

Don't get it? Recite the italic phrase in Hokkien.

With all this jokes around and the idiosyncracies in the press everyday, I bet we Malaysians will beat Japan in no time to become the most long-lived nationals in this world.

Hahahaha....

Haha...

Ha.

Look left, look right, look left again

I received a terrible news, that my friend was robbed and attacked in his own house in KL and had to stay at home for a month to recuperate from his injuries. I can't imagine what kind of trauma he had encountered and what level of abuse had been inflicted upon him. To date, he can't be contacted and I am really worried and saddened. I can only pray and wish him speedy recovery.

Back in Kluang I heard from my folks that the snatch theft incident had been rising, probably due mainly to the current economic downturn. Pouch being snatched while walking on the road, car windows being smashed (since now everyone locks the car doors) and handbag robbed.

This is a time, where we must keep a close watch and be cautious. We must be vigilant to look out for others as well as ourselves. Crime rates shouldn't be escalating if the police force executes their obligations whole-heartedly, therefore I wouldn't hope that the same taskforce will be able to protect us.

So here's a few tips for all to be on the safe side (especially for ladies):

  • Try to deposit/withdraw money from the bank in the daytime.
  • While taking a cab alone, remember to cross-check if the driver matches the identification displayed. Record the carplate number with your cellphone. (I always do this when CM takes the cab to work.)
  • If someone waiting for the lift with you looks suspicious, you can always walk away and let him/her take the lift first and wait for another round.
  • Try not to wear conspicuous jewelry or restrictive (aphrodisiacal) clothing and shoes. Leave them for the appropriate occasions when you are certain that you have no reason to anticipate danger such as large crowds.
  • Always good to have a buddy for anything such as going to the washroom, jogging or swimming, karaoke-ing.
  • Be alert while walking along the road.

The above may sound paranoid, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Malaysia's Police Report

Posting a police report here as future reference. Notice the primary school Malay tatabahasa (grammar). Is this what we can expect after investing so many years and money in upgrading the Malay Language standard? Seriously, I can write more descriptively and better than L/KPL Idrus. I remembered one of my uncle saying, "When they change everything to Bahasa Malaysia, the Chinese can still write and speak better than them." This is what we call competitiveness.

Anyway, this is just for reference. What to do, Malaysian standard mah.

Hong Kong Trip IV

One glimpse at the silhouette below and you know where we were. Yes, it's the Tian Tan Big Buddha at Lantau Island. The monastery on the mountain is a peaceful place in pursuit of the bodhisattvahood. One could reach the monastery by cable car, by bus or by tracking. CM and I took the bus up and the captivating sceneries of lush meadow reminds me of "The Sound of Music".
The great Buddha statue sits on the Wooden Fish Peak (木鱼峰) surrounded by bodhisattvas like the one below. This shot was taken by CM using her compact cam, one of the best from the trip which I appreciate very much.

The best part is that the monastery actually has chalets for rent. Probably we will stay a couple of days there and help out on our next trip to HK:p

The Po Lin Monastery entrance gate with the majestic mountain as backdrop.

We made our descent via cable car and we share the same cabin with a mother, her daughter and son. Throughout the journey, they conversed enthusiastically about the trip to visit the Big Buddha, how well the government has developed the tourist spot. From their conversation, I knew that they are local. This reminds me that I don't remember hearing anyone says," Wah, the Bukit Merah Lake Town Resort is really a good place for vacation!" If anyone of you have been to BMLTRM, then you will know what I mean. Then I thought of the Visit Malaysia 200X posters I saw the other day at the railway station. It seems that the poster design remains the same every year, even the pictures. Same old slogan, just that we change the year's figure. It's like telling people, visit sekali dah cukup (once is enough). Then I thought about the drummings to beef up Malaysian tourism by our politicians every year, the budgets...then I wonder, where'd all the money gone to? Care to tell us, Datuk Azalina Othman Said?

We had our Twin Peak this day, after decending Lantau Peak by cable car, immediately we were on our way up The Peak.

This is for all Americans and the people in the whole wide world, "Bush sucks!" (my sis told me i should throw my shoes at him.)

Too bad Mahathir/Abdullah/Najib's wax figures are not (qualified to be) in place, otherwise I would do all Malaysians a favor. (BTW, MM Lee Kuan Yew's wax figure has been there don't know since when. Power!)

The Peak

(FYI, you do not need to pay HKD20 to get this view. Photography kaki will know.)

Memorabilia:

I had the best roadside seafood at Temple Street. When I say roadside, I meant that the vehicles inch past you by less than 5 inches away. Tsing-dao beer, fried mee hoon, HK-style chilli crab is indeed the best combo!

Although we were really exhausted, physically and financially, but the trip worth each and every ringgit and sen. The experiences and memories we brought back are priceless and I would like to end this by proposing a toast, "Many more to come."

NZ next?

Hong Kong Trip - Day III

Today, our plan was to visit Chow Yuen Fatt's hometown, Lamma Island.

But before that, we need to fill our tummy. The dim sum at Dao Xiang (along Nathan Road near Yao Ma Tei's MTR) is really good, more delicious and cheaper than Luk Yu Tea House.

Kiddo climbing rocks at Lamma Island

Billy Elliot
(To kids out there reading this entry: NEVER EVER RUN AND CLIMB ROCKS WITH A LOLLIPOP IN YOUR MOUTH!)

Lady with her shy pet dog.

Best sandwich we ever had...SOooo Muuuch better than Subway, only at this cafe on Lamma Island. Can't remember the name of the cafe, but it's beside the realtor office.

Old man and the dogs.

Lamma bayview.

Came across Ah Po beancurd while making our way to the wind turbine power generator.

The conventional coal power generator opposite the wind turbine.

Village settings.

CM and I.

Lamma sunset view.

The ferry that ferried us to and fro Lamma.

Yung Kee roast duck. Just order the roast duck and Yangzhou fried rice would suffice. Remember to make reservations, otherwise you will need to wait for at least 45 minutes.

Memorabilia:
  • The island is a pleasant getaway for the city slickers. And you get to see the other side of the multi-facet Hong Kong, the simple neck of the wood on a humble island.
  • There are lots of pet dogs on the isle.
  • The sandwich is darn good!
  • Almost half of the people with camera in HK uses DSLR.
